Gear Hex

400-1 Gear Reduction

About

General Info

This fully 3D printed assembly converts 400 rotations of motion into 1 singular rotation through an unconventional method. Using two harmonic drives offset by one tooth, creates this drastic gear ratio.

Design

Harmonic Drive

This project was entirely inspired and reversed engineered from a similar project found on the web. The mechanism uses two harmonic drives each with a gear ratio of 20:1 to create a 400:1 gear reduction. All components of this design including the flexible material were fabricated with additive manufacturing methods. The design of the assembly was carefully engineered to yield a simplistic and intact product.

Research

Gear Design

Developing this mechanism came with research on spur gears and harmonic drives. Devoting numerous hours to the study of gear design allowed gear teeth to be incorporated into my mechanism.
